A hybrid craft still life artefact.
A hand-thrown glazed vessel with textile passementerie embellishments mounted on a piece of slate.
This piece was inspired by the hand-turned wooden tassel moulds used as tops in passementerie tassel and tieback making. The passementerie elements are centuries old techniques for adding decorative, textual and colour visual points onto wooden moulds. The passementerie skills used are ruff making, netting and off-the-loom braiding.
This item tells the sad story of the decimation of heritage trades and skills in the U.K, not just passementerie, but also the turning of tassel moulds and spinning and manufacture of yarn. It also highlights the domino effect of these skills dying out on the end result, as each craft does not stand alone but is fed by others.
